Unfortunately this is one of the "not so cool".
One of the more sobering events on our trip as I knew we would encounter - as eluded to on the description of our blog: "...the cool (and probably not so cool) things we encounter on our trip"
"April 25, Three bomb blasts rip through the popular back packer town of Dahab, (Sinai) Egypt."
Only one week earlier, we had left this wonderful town and its friendly people. Chances are the bombs were being constructed while we were there in the town.
Two of the bombs detonated in front of the supermarket we shopped at a few times and the little foot bridge we crossed every night to get to the little restaurants. (The bridge was about 50m from the photo of Renee at the lamp post and the "no camels" sign.)
Even "closer to home", the third bomb destroyed the Al Capone restaurant where we ate our fantastic icecream thickshakes every night. The photo of Tim and Eglys eating the strawberry thickshake would be one of the last few pictures taken of that scene that wasn't for criminal investigations. :(
"The bombs were timed to be triggered after sunset for maximum casualties...."
Naturally, this was the time we were usually there.
Interesting trains of thoughts start to unravel when you think that we could have left one week later, or extended our stay by a week in some previous country... Thank God that didnt occur.
Renee and I don't have the words or even the thoughts to try and fathom how humans become capable of inflicting such atrocities, but can but hope as a collective we find a solution sooner rather than later.
Such a waste of human life and potential of those who were killed in the attacks. Our thoughts also go out to the many friendly locals who's livelihoods are likely to be severely affected by the loss of friends, security and business despite their warm welcoming attitudes towards us.
